HESI-A2 Exam

Who must take the HESI-A2 exam?

Applicants for the following programs must include HESI-A2 exam results with their application:

  • BSN Traditional Program
  • BSN Accelerated Second Degree Program
How much does it cost?

The cost is approximately $100 (Subject to change by Elsevier and Prometric)

Where can I take the exam? Can I take the exam at Mason?

The HESI-A2 is offered at any of over 300 Prometric testing centers. There are five centers in the District of Columbia (DC), Maryland, and Virginia. Mason is not a testing center, so you cannot take the exam at Mason.

What is Mason’s school ID number?

The Mason school ID number is 198819 and may only be used by students applying to the Mason nursing program.

When can I take the HESI-A2 exam?

You may take the HESI-A2 Exam (version 1) any time in the twelve months before the January 15 deadline date. (January 16, previous year-January 14, day before the deadline).

When should I take the HESI-A2 exam?

We recommend applicants take the exam after completing Anatomy and Physiology II, and no later than the third week of December. Register early as December dates book quickly. Keep in mind, December weather, power outages, and other unforeseen circumstances may cause testing delays.

Can I take the exam more than one time?

No. Applicants may take the exam only once during an application cycle.

What’s on the HESI-A2 exam? How long does the exam take?

The School of Nursing requires the following sections on the exam. Prometric only allows four hours for the full exam. We recommend you allocate the following time to each section:

  • Math, 52 minutes
  • Reading Comprehension, 43 minutes
  • Vocabulary and General Knowledge, 52 minutes
  • Grammar, 43 minutes
  • Anatomy and Physiology, 28 minutes
  • Learning Style, 11 minutes
  • Personality Profile, 11 minutes

NOTE: The Biology and Chemistry sections are not required for the Mason BSN application. The scores in these sections will not be used in the evaluation process.

What is a passing score?

There is no stated "passing score." Each application is evaluated on the strength of the credentials you present and judged against equally strong applications.

Can Mason send the results to another school?

No. Mason will not transfer HESI-A2 scores to other nursing schools; however, Elsevier will. Visit the Elsevier website or contact Elsevier customer support for more information. 

What happens if I don’t submit my HESI-A2 scores in the Supporting Documents Package?

Your application will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.

What if I took the exam for another institution and it has additional section scores on it?

The scores in these sections will not be used in the evaluation process.

What if I need special accommodations to take the test?

To receive testing accommodations on the HESI-A2, contact Elsevier at 1-800-222-9570. George Mason is not a testing center and therefore, students must go through Elsevier to receive accommodations.

Where can I get study materials?

Elsevier publishes review materials for this exam that may be purchased directly through Elsevier or through your local bookstore. Visit the Evolve-Elsevier website for information on study materials.

How do I register to take the exam?

Step 1: Create an Evolve account and register for the exam.

Please visit the Elsevier website to create your Evolve account. The HESI-A2 Account Creation and Registration Instructions (pdf) are provided as a tool to assist you with account creations and registration. If you need assistance please contact Elsevier at 1-800-222-9570. 

Step 2: Receive an Eligibility ID/user name and schedule your exam.

Elsevier will email an Eligibility ID/user name in one to three business days. The email includes instructions for scheduling your exam with your selected Prometric Testing Center.

Scheduling tip: Take your exam prior to December to avoid peak exam times and to ensure timely delivery of your results.

What should I bring with me to the testing center?

On the day of the exam, arrive at your chosen Prometric Testing Center 30 minutes prior to your exam. Present your Eligibility ID/User name and one form of approved, non-expired government ID with a picture and signature on the document. Your ID information must match the information submitted to Evolve during the registration process. If your ID, photo, or signature do not match, the testing center will not allow you to enter and take the exam.

You will be sent to your assigned testing station with instructions. You must have your Evolve Eligibility ID/user name and password memorized to sign into the exam. You will not be able to retrieve this information once you have entered the testing environment.

An on-screen calculator will be provided. You may not use your own calculator or device with a calculator function.

How long does it take to get my test results?

Your results may take up to seven days to become available to print.

How do I get my test results/scores?

You will need to print your test results/scores. To print

  1. Ensure you have the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.
  2. Visit
  3. Click "Student Site."
  4. Log in with your Evolve username and password.
  5. Click "HESI Assessment Student Access."
  6. Click the plus sign ("+") next to "Admission Exam Report."

The School of Nursing requires a copy of your one-page Admissions Assessment Report reflecting your HESI-A2 text scores. This page indicates the breakdown of Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary and Knowledge, Anatomy and Physiology, Math, and Cumulative Score. Do not submit the multi-page summary report available from clicking the "Admission Exam Report" linking text.
