Traditional BSN Admissions

Mason’s Traditional BSN program is a full-time, pre-licensure program for applicants who do not hold a prior bachelor’s degree. The program provides successful applicants an opportunity to experience nursing in a variety of clinical settings throughout the National Capitol area. The program admits once a year in fall and spaces are limited, therefore the application process is highly competitive.

We currently offer two types of admission for the Traditional BSN program:

  • Direct Admission is a four-year program for incoming freshmen ONLY
  • Second-Gate Admission is a two-year program for pre-nursing Mason students admitted to the university prior to fall 2021 and incoming transfer students ONLY

Please click on the corresponding admission to learn the application and eligibility guidelines for each program.

Application and Eligibility Guidelines for Direct Admission

  • Applicant must be an incoming freshman student
  • Submission of the Mason Application
  • Specify Nursing as your intended major on the application
  • Respond to short answer prompts, which will be provided to you after you submit your Mason Application
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in your high school coursework
  • Have a history of engagement in experiential learning opportunities
  • Success in math and science coursework

Simply meeting the BSN application and eligibility guidelines does not guarantee your admission to the program.

If you are not admitted to the nursing program, you would still be admitted to Mason as an undeclared student in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). CHHS Advisors can help you identify other major options and/or other pathways to a degree in Nursing. Please take the time to explore all of our pathways into nursing, as well as the other undergraduate programs and majors in the College of Health and Human Services.

Mason’s Office of Admissions will send decision letters via email. For the Early Action deadline, decisions will be mailed on December 15. For the Regular Decision deadline, decisions will be mailed by late March.

Decision Notification

The CHHS Office of Student Affairs will send decision letters via email by the end of March. All decisions of the Review Committee are final and cannot be appealed. Common reasons for denial include: incomplete application, nursing pre-requisite/science GPA was not competitive, received a grade below C in the required pre-requisites, and sheer volume – given the number of applications received for the limited number of clinical spaces, other applicants presented stronger applications.

We recommend that all applicants participate in our Traditional BSN Information Session to learn more about important application guidelines and expectations.
