If you are not currently a Mason student, or if you will graduate from Mason prior to the start of the BSN program, you are considered a transfer applicant. You will be required to submit an undergraduate degree-seeking Mason transfer application. All transfer applicants should review Mason’s transfer application requirements available on the Transfer webpage of the Office of Admissions website.
We highly recommend all prospective applicants attend a BSN Information Session. This will provide applicants the opportunity to learn about the program and the application process. Additionally, at the conclusion of the presentation, applicants will have an opportunity to meet briefly with an advisor to discuss any specific questions they may have.
Transfer Credit and Transcript Evaluations
The Mason Office of Admissions awards all transfer credit. Transfer credit evaluations are completed only after a student has gained admission to the university, and paid the Enrollment Deposit. All courses from regionally accredited institutions will transfer to Mason, if the course was passed with a C or better.
To determine whether your course will satisfy the nursing prerequisite or Mason Core course requirement, Mason provides many tools for you to evaluate your transfer credit. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Your unofficial transcripts from each institution attended
- A copy of your course description from your institution’s course catalog
- A copy of the Prerequisite Information Sheet for your program
Transfer Credit Matrix
The Transfer Credit Matrix is an interactive tool listing courses from many institutions (listed by state). While this does not contain every course from every institution of higher learning it does contain many. Look up your institution by state, then the course number. If your course is listed, when you select it, the Transfer Matrix will show you the Mason Equivalent Course. Compare this to the course listed on the Prerequisite Information Sheet. If it is the same, the course will satisfy the nursing prerequisite or Mason Core course requirement.
Virginia Community College students are provided a special link on the Transfer Credit Matrix page. This exclusive list provides transfer equivalencies for all courses within the VCCS system. If the course is not listed it does not transfer to Mason.
Mason Catalog – BSN Program
If your course is not listed in the Transfer Credit Matrix, you will need a copy of your course description from the institution you attended. The Mason Catalog provides a description of each Mason prerequisite course required for the BSN programs. Compare your course descriptions to the Mason course descriptions. If the course descriptions are the same, your course will likely transfer to Mason as the same course (Reminder: The Office of Admissions awards all transfer credit as noted above).
Individual Course and Transfer Credit Evaluations
If your course is not listed in the Transfer Credit Matrix AND your course description does not align with the Mason course description, there is one more option. Email BSNapps@gmu.edu the following information:
- Name of the institution where the course was taken
- Course number (including the prefix)
- Course title
- Course description
- Number of credits
- Semester and year when the course was taken
- Grade received
- Mason course information which most closely aligns with your course
This method takes longer than an average email response and you may be requested to provide a course syllabus. We cannot guarantee the course will satisfy the nursing prerequisite or Mason Core course requirement, however, we can give you our best advice based on past transfer credit assignments. No courses will be reviewed after November 15.
Transcript Evaluations
Transcript Review: Because the Office of Admissions awards all transfer credit, the Office of Student Affairs no longer performs transcript evaluations or reviews. Using the methods detailed in the sections above, applicants should evaluate their own transcripts and email BSNapps@gmu.edu with specific course questions, only after using the above-listed resources.
International Transcript Evaluations: The Mason Office of Admissions requires a certified course-by-course evaluation of all international transcripts. All international applicants should review the International Admissions Requirements.
