It is not only the College’s growth, but its growth in the right direction that has inspired us to donate,” said Ravi. </p> <p lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">Chanda earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (‘92) and Master of Science in Nursing (‘96). Their daughter also earned her BSN from Mason in 2008. Ravi served as a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering and Computing for 11 years (1990-2001). </p> <div class="align-right"> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq271/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2023-10/IMG_3082.jpeg?itok=wb4vsE7s" width="350" height="197" alt="REACH IN US Heart &amp; Soul Walk" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <p lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">REACH IN US was founded on the mission to improve the lives of those in their communities through health care and education. <a href="https://reachinus.org/who-we-are/" target="_blank">The Foundation</a> began as an informal organization named Friends of Anandwan, dedicated to supporting health care and education initiatives in India. After becoming an established non-profit, REACH IN US now undertakes projects both in India and the United States. </p> <p lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">This year, REACH IN US celebrated its 17th annual Heart &amp; Soul Walk, an event dedicated to bringing together supporters. </p> <p lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">The Foundation has been a long-standing partner with Northern Virginia Community College, providing funding to students through two-year fellowships. In alignment with the College’s values, Chanda and Ravi are motivated to provide more opportunities to students who may not have them otherwise with donations to the College’s School of Nursing. </p> <p lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US" xml:lang="EN-US">“We want to provide individuals who are at a critical stage in life where a little bit of financial help could change the trajectory of their lives. The month-long college-wide donation drive collected approximately 357 items across the College of Health and Human Service’s (CHHS) five departments, a testament to the CHHS community’s commitment to helping those in need.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Kendall Hunter, president of MSWSA, was motivated to organize the donation drive because many survivors of domestic violence experience financial and housing instability, which also impacts children who live in households with domestic violence and may need to relocate with a parent who is seeking safety.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Hunter said, "Through our studies, social work students have learned about the intersection between domestic violence, homelessness/housing instability, and financial instability. The MSWSA also recognizes the impact domestic violence has on children's emotional well-being, social functioning, and academic functioning." </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Each CHHS department participated in the competition to collect the most nonperishable food items and cleaning supplies for <a href="http://facetscares.org/" target="_blank">FACETS</a>, a Fairfax nonprofit organization that provides services to families, such as food, emergency shelter, medical care, and safe housing. The endowed scholarship supports the cost of tuition for students with academic merit and who demonstrate financial need.</p> <p>“We are thankful to the Helene Fuld Health Trust for offering our students scholarships that provide financial support and enable our students to focus on their studies.  Our accelerated BSN students are highly motivated to finish the program and enter the workforce as baccalaureate-prepared nurses equipped to provide competent and compassionate nursing care for individuals and populations. Financial support contributes to the achievement of that goal,” says Dr. Martha (Marti) Kubik, Director of the School of Nursing at Mason. </p> <p>The College of Health and Human Services has more than 3,100 graduate and undergraduate students with a majority-minority student body. This year, there are 78 students enrolled in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program with one of its’ most diverse classes to-date with 59% minority students and 37% first-generation college students.  </p> <p>The Helene Fuld Health Trust was established in 1953 and is the nation’s largest funder devoted exclusively to nursing students and nursing education. The trust establishes endowed scholarships for students in baccalaureate programs at selected nursing schools through an invitational only process.
